The star of both operas was the Swedish tenor Jussi Björling who sang a\nwide repertoire of roles in Stockholm before achieving international fame\nin the late 1930s. Björling’s voice spanned the lyrical and spinto tenor\nroles, equally at home as Rodolfo and as Radames and many of his\nperformances, both live and studio, can be found in the Pristine catalogue.\nBoth \u003cem\u003eCavalleria\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003ePagliacci\u003c\/em\u003e were in his stage\nrepertoire, though at the Met he only sang a few performances of\n\u003cem\u003e\nCavalleria\n\u003c\/em\u003e\n, and none of \u003cem\u003ePagliacci\u003c\/em\u003e. Björling recorded \u003cem\u003eCavalleria\u003c\/em\u003e\ntwice, this 1953 version and a second time for Decca in 1957 with Renata\nTebaldi in stereo. The recording of \u003cem\u003ePagliacci\u003c\/em\u003e is the only one he\nmade, and while both operas were issued on LP and subsequently on CD, the\nlast reissue (by Naxos) was in 2004. Though some consider Björling’s voice\nto be ‘cool’ he has plenty of Italianate vocal passion for these two fiery\nroles. His duet with Santuzza in \u003cem\u003eCavalleria\u003c\/em\u003e is callousness\npersonified, but the final plea to his mother is truly heartfelt. In\n\u003cem\u003e\nPagliacci\n\u003c\/em\u003e\nBjörling gives us a slightly darker tone, compared with \u003cem\u003eCavalleria\u003c\/em\u003e\n, while maintaining his true legato line. His ‘Vesti la giubba’ is tragic\nrather than histrionic, no sobbing here, while the finale is much more cold\nfury than unhinged raving, and all the more powerful for it.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nZinka Milanov is Santuzza, a role she sang many times at the Met though\nonly once with Björling (in 1959). The Croatian soprano made her Met debut\nin 1937 and gave more than 400 performances in a career that lasted until\nthe old Met closed in 1966. The Met’s large radio audience would have been\nvery familiar with Milanov in this role, her expressive voice easily\nembodying the emotional turmoil the character endures while managing the\nvocal and dynamic range with ease. Robert Merrill is Alfio in\n\u003cem\u003e\nCavalleria\n\u003c\/em\u003e\nand Silvio in \u003cem\u003ePagliacci\u003c\/em\u003e. A Met stalwart and a frequent\ncollaborator with Björling on record (their 1951 recording of\n\u003cem\u003e\nThe Pearl Fishers\n\u003c\/em\u003e\nduet is still one of the most popular versions), Merrill was principally an\nexcellent Verdi baritone, but appeared in a wide variety of Italian and\nFrench roles at the Met. Although he appeared as Tonio in\n\u003cem\u003e\nPagliacci\n\u003c\/em\u003e\nmany times, his first appearance in the opera was as Silvio, which he only\nsang that one time. Interestingly, he never sang Alfio at the Met. Leonard\nWarren sings Tonio in this recording, bringing true Iago-like malevolence\nto the role.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nVictoria de Los Angeles is Nedda. The Spanish soprano enjoyed a long and\ndistinguished international career with her beautiful voice and excellent\ntechnique that allowed her to sing roles as diverse as Mimì, Carmen and\nElisabeth in \u003cem\u003eTannhäuser\u003c\/em\u003e. Her duet with Silvio showcases the true\nbeauty of her voice, and this must be one of the best sung Nedda’s on disc.\nBut she is also capable of a lovely lightness of touch as she tries to carry\non the play in act two despite Canio’s outbursts.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nThe operas are conducted by Italian-born Renato Cellini. Cellini spent most\nof his brief career in the US as the General Director of the New Orleans\nOpera for ten years after a short stint as a staff conductor at the Met.
