In the case of the later recording (\u003cfont color=\"#0000ff\"\u003ePristine PACO 215\u003c\/font\u003e), the\nrecording was made in stereo, the support cast is much stronger, but the\nCallas voice is generally regarded as some way past its best.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nFor the present, 1954 recording, we have Callas at her very peak, but in a\nstodgy mono recording with a cast which often leaves plenty to be desired.\nIn a review which expressed overall disappointment with the recording, \u003ci\u003eThe\nGramophone\u003c\/i\u003e’s Phillip Hope-Wallace, in November 1954, wrote: “So, finally\nwhat about Callas, which some people would say, and perhaps rightly, is all\nthat really matters in considering \u003cem\u003eNorma\u003c\/em\u003e? As I have suggested,\nwhere it is a question of musicianship and of dramatic interpretation and\ncoloration of the voice she is quite magnificent, her phrasing has an\netched quality, she is at once a great dramatic artist and great singer in\nthe way that Frida Leider was. The musicianship of her \u003cem\u003eCasta Diva\u003c\/em\u003e\nleaves most of the versions I know as non-starters, the \u003cem\u003eglissando\u003c\/em\u003e\npassages in the cabaletta “Deh bello a me ritorna” shortly afterwards are\nbreathtaking, Norma’s anguish when she finds out that she is betrayed, the\nreproachful dignity and biting scorn of her scenes with the wretched\nPollione and her hieratic magnanimity in dealing with her rival—all these\nare truly wonderful. She also makes you hear the music for the first time\n(an overworked description no doubt, but a quality not otherwise easy to\ndescribe).”\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nNearly half a century later, in 2002, the verdict is similar from\n\u003ci\u003e Gramophone\u003c\/i\u003e’s John Steane: “The first [Norma], from 1954, comes to life only\nwhen Callas sings. Serafín disappoints in this .. \u003cem\u003e.\u003c\/em\u003e Nicola\nRossi-Lemeni as Oroveso is allowed to sing off­-pitch, and Mario Filippeschi\nas Pollione sings his role from start to finish as though marked\n\u003cem\u003e\nsenza espressione\n\u003c\/em\u003e\n. Then comes Callas, and the effect is immediate.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nThe fascination of this intensely personal, affectionate ‘Casta diva’ is\ncoupled with admiration for a technique which makes her able to do the\nright thing - the reiterated high As, for example, are not achieved by\nmeans of a ‘lift’ and are also not smoothed out (as often happens) into a\nsingle continuous note. The \u003cem\u003efioriture\u003c\/em\u003e are exquisite - but not so\nthe last note of all, the sustained high F which is perilous in the\nextreme. Wonders abound in the cabaletta; she leaves, and on comes Ebe\nStignani, the Adalgisa. At Covent Garden, as I remember, the sheer beauty\nof her voice (after Callas’s) was enough to make everybody sit up; on\nrecord, the immediate gratitude gives way very quickly to the realisation\nthat we are back in the realm of the blandly inexpressive. And so it\ncontinues until Callas’s next appearance, and so on throughout the opera.\nIf the last disc in this set (Act 2) could be issued separately it would\nperhaps constitute the prime recommendation of all, for here is the great\nrole sung by the great artist at a time when the voice still matched the\nart.”\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nThe only respite thus far would come in 2014 with this aside, again in\n\u003ci\u003e Gramophone\u003c\/i\u003e: “Hearing afresh that 1954 Norma in ‘Maria Callas Remastered’ I\ncan’t help thinking that it was the frailty of the LP format that was 80\nper cent of the problem”.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nWhile I’m not sure that this Pristine Ambient XR remaster – or any other –\nwill ever be able to work sufficient magic on certain aspects of this\nrecording, for those whose primary interest is in the remarkable instrument\nthat Maria Callas had at her disposal, it has to surely be an essential\nrelease.
