Koussevitzky programmed\nSibelius’s music regularly, including entire concerts solely devoted to his\nmusic, and the weekly broadcasts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, together\nwith regular tours around the north-eastern United States (including\nDetroit, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and New York) completely justified critic\nOlin Downes’ remark that ‘No conductor in America as done as much for the\nmusic of Sibelius as Mr Koussevitzky’.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nThe obvious empathy between the conductor and the composer (the two\ncorresponded regularly) shines through these broadcasts. The orchestra is\nsuperbly well-versed in the music, indeed Sibelius wrote to Koussevitzky to\ncongratulate him on the ‘supreme mastery’ displayed by his commercial\nrecording of the 2\u003csup\u003end\u003c\/sup\u003e symphony. Each composition merges from\nSibelius’s deep affinity with his native Finland. The tone poem Finlandia\nis an evocation of the spirit of the Finnish people, written in 1899 as\nFinland chaffed under Russian control, while the Swan of Tuonela is part of\nthe Lemminkäinen Suite of four legends from the Kalevala. The four\nsymphonies each depict an aspect of the composer’s closeness to nature.\nSymphony No.1 evokes the forests and lakes of his homeland; Symphony No.2\ngoes further, placing man at the heart of this untamed land, and projecting\na bright and optimistic future. Written shortly after World War I,\nSymphonies No. 5 and No. 6 are more pastoral, joyous even, telling of a\ntime when man and his environment work in harmony. It is perhaps\nsignificant that Koussevitzky often placed the Sibelius works at the end of\nhis concerts, so that the audience would leave the auditorium with a\nlasting impression of this glorious music.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nKoussevitzky recorded a significant amount of Sibelius’ music commercially\nwith the BSO in the 1930s, including the 2\u003csup\u003end\u003c\/sup\u003e and 5\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e\nsymphonies, and there is a splendid recording of the 7\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e\nsymphony made in 1933 when Koussevitzky was in London guest-conducting the\nBBC Symphony Orchestra.
