It fills an odd gap in his\ndiscography in that all but one of his complete studio opera sets is now\navailable in “official” transfers – the ones with Callas in Warner’s\ncomplete box devoted to the soprano, the EMI \u003cem\u003eTraviata\u003c\/em\u003e with\nAntonietta Stella on Testament, and his Deccas in another complete box from\nthat label – except for his stereo remake of \u003cem\u003eLucia di Lammermoor\u003c\/em\u003e.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nThis lone item had originally been recorded by the Mercury Records team\n(Wilma Cozart Fine, producer; Harold Lawrence, musical supervisor; and\nRobert Fine, balance engineer) as part of a series made in Italy for the\nmusic publisher Ricordi, which included a Callas set of Cherubini’s \u003cem\u003eMedea\u003c\/em\u003e (reissued in the Warner box) and a \u003cem\u003eRigoletto\u003c\/em\u003e with\nBastiannini (Pristine PACO 184). It originally came out on Mercury, but the\nrights stayed with Ricordi, who would later license it out to labels as\ndisparate as Deutsche Grammophon in Europe and the bargain-basement Everest\nOpera Series in the USA.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nRicordi itself published the first (and only authorized) CD version in\n1988, which was from various reports an unsatisfactory affair that had only\nfour tracks for the entire set – one for each original LP side! Since then,\nit has appeared on a variety of independent labels, sometimes in mono\n(although it was a stereo original), at other times identified as a live\nperformance (which it wasn’t) and usually in transfers which, according to\nreviewers, betrayed their LP origins with thumps, clicks and off-center\npitch wow.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nThis set’s dismal reissue history coincides with a mixed critical\nreception. While Bastiannini is universally singled out for praise for his\nEnrico, the contributions of the other performers have received wildly\ndivergent notices. Although some claim that Di Stefano was past his prime\nwhen he made this recording, \u003cem\u003eFanfare’\u003c\/em\u003es Lynn René Bayley, citing a\ncontemporaneous Italian and French aria recital Di Stefano made for Decca,\nwrites that “1959 was a good year for him, in fact his last really good\none.” Indeed, while there is some hardness to his tone in some of louder\npassages, one doesn’t hear the strain and intonation problems that are\npresent on some of his recordings from a few years earlier (for example,\n“Cielo e mar” in his 1957 complete \u003cem\u003eGioconda\u003c\/em\u003e), even at the\npunishingly high pitch La Scala was using at the time of this \u003cem\u003eLucia\u003c\/em\u003e (around A4=449 Hz, verified by the 50 Hz mains hum I removed\nfrom the original recording).\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nEven the sound of the original recording itself, though made by the\nlegendary Mercury team, has come under some criticism. Reviewing the\nRicordi CD made from the master tapes, \u003cem\u003eFanfare\u003c\/em\u003e’s Robert Levine\nwrote that the “sound is excellent in a big, forward way, but it has no\natmosphere at all – it sounds like the worst of digital, although I don’t\nthink digital recording is the problem.” While transferring this, I noticed\nthat while the recording was clear and had good stereo separation, it was\nalso rather dry and close-up, magnifying the occasional harshness of the\nsinging. Through re-equalization and the addition of a modest amount of\ndigital reverb, I’ve tried to ameliorate some of these issues. (I also\ncorrected some channel imbalances and removed hum, studio noises, and the\nsound of traffic outside the theater.)
