For though van Beinum encompasses the Symphony's several\ncontrasted moods, giving each its own distinctive cut and contour, there is\na simplicity (an inevitability, if you like) about the way paragraph is\nmatched with paragraph. The \u003cem\u003eaccelerando\u003c\/em\u003e is here as sparingly used\nas, under Jochum it is freely indulged. When it comes, building rapidly,\nfor instance, towards the first great climax after what has been an\nextraordinarily simple, dignified start to the symphony, the motion is\nswift, eager, clear cut. And that, in turn, is of a piece with van Beinum's\nwonderfully keen handling of the music's quicker, demonic subjects.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"margin-left: 25px;\"\u003e\nNobility rather than splendour, grief assuaged rather than pity openly\nregistered: these are the qualities which distinguish van Beinum's account\nof Bruckner's last symphony, and its Adagio in particular. In the \u003cem\u003eScherzo\u003c\/em\u003e a sufficiently ominous note is struck, and the \u003cem\u003eTrio\u003c\/em\u003e is superb, glintingly quick.” \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp style=\"margin-left: 25px;\"\u003e– R. O., \u003cem\u003eThe Gramophone\u003c\/em\u003e, December 1977\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe curious opening phrase to this British LP review – “better late than\nnever” – reveals that this fabulous 1956 recording of Bruckner’s Symphony\nNo. 9 was not originally issued in the United Kingdom, nor indeed that\nwidely as far as I’ve been able to tell. It appeared in Germany in 1956 and\nin Canada the following year, with a Dutch issue following in 1959. Only by\nthe 1970s did it start to appear further afield – “stereo” versions\nappeared in Britain in 1971 and in Italy in 1973, almost certainly using\nthe notorious fake stereo effect of the time.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nThis review from 1977 therefore refers to the first proper UK release of\nthe original mono recording, and one can only assume that, for a work such\nas this, the folly of not recording it in stereo led to its relative\nobscurity for so many years. Indeed the reviewer goes on to express the\nbenefit to the work of a full stereo sound as he discusses other, more\nrecent issues, and you read between the lines his disappointment that such\na wonderful interpretation lacks this finishing touch.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nPristine’s Ambient Stereo XR remastering does not, of course, attempt to\ncreate a fake stereo soundfield. Instead it brings a sense of dimensional\nspace around the orchestra, as well as bringing greater depth and a\nsonority closer to the true sound of the orchestra as heard in the\nConcertgebouw Hall in Amsterdam.
